Jashpur Police Nabs Mastermind Behind Bataikela Robbery and Shooting Mastermind Ravi Oraon Apprehended in Ranchi, Jharkhand

Jashpur, July 22, 2025 – Jashpur Police have successfully apprehended Ravi Oraon, the alleged mastermind behind the robbery and shooting at a customer service center in Batkela, who had been absconding since the incident. Oraon was located and brought back from Ranchi, Jharkhand.Oraon, along with his accomplices, had intended to rob the customer service center, which tragically resulted in the death of an elderly woman during the shooting.

Police had previously arrested three other accused in connection with the case and sent them to jail.Details of the Case and InvestigationThe incident dates back to November 5, 2024, when the complainant, Sanchu Kumar Gupta, a resident of Batkela, reported to Kansabel Police Station that two individuals suddenly entered his customer service center (Kiosk Bank) at around 11:00 AM, brandishing a country-made pistol and demanding money in a bag.

When Gupta tried to reason with them, one of the assailants struck him on the head with the pistol, causing him to bleed.Upon hearing Gupta’s cries, his grandmother, the deceased Urmila Bai, came from an adjacent shop and confronted the attackers, asking why they were assaulting her grandson.

The assailant holding the pistol then fired at Urmila Bai, leading to her immediate death at the scene.Police Action and ArrestsFollowing the report, a case was registered at Kansabel Police Station under sections of the BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita) and Arms Act, including 309(5), 332(b), 109, 103(1), 61(2), 111, 311, 312, and 25, 27. Given the sensitivity of the matter, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jashpur, Shri Shashi Mohan Singh, formed multiple police teams to apprehend the culprits.

During the investigation, based on evidence from the scene, intelligence, and technical support, police identified Ratu Ram (29), a resident of Batkela Lalgoda, as a participant in the robbery. Upon interrogation, Ratu Ram confessed to the crime, revealing that he had met mastermind Ravi Oraon while previously incarcerated. After his release, Oraon contacted him about a robbery plan. Ratu Ram then identified the customer service center in Batkela for the robbery and provided reconnaissance details to Oraon.

Oraon then contacted Pitul Ram, a resident of Sirimkela village, Duldula Police Station, for assistance. Pitul Ram, in turn, enlisted his brother Situl Ram, who provided his motorcycle to Oraon for the robbery in exchange for a share of the proceeds.Police subsequently recovered the bullet casing from the crime scene and the motorcycle used in the incident. Ratu Ram, Pitul Ram, and Situl Ram were formally arrested and sent to judicial remand.Mastermind’s Elusive Nature and Final CaptureMastermind Ravi Oraon, however, remained at large since the incident. Under the leadership of SSP Jashpur Shri Shashi Mohan Singh, police teams relentlessly pursued Oraon, utilizing active informants and technical assistance.Information from the technical team and informants eventually led police to Ranchi, Jharkhand. A team was dispatched to Jharkhand, and with the cooperation of Ranchi Police (Pundag Chowki and Doranda Police Station staff), Oraon was taken into custody and brought back to Jashpur.

Jashpur Police had made previous attempts to apprehend Oraon, who proved to be highly elusive. On one occasion, he appeared in Jashpur District Court for a hearing related to a previous case, disguised. Police traced him, but he managed to escape on a scooter, abandoning it in a jungle and shedding his clothes to evade capture. In another attempt, Jashpur Police surrounded his native village but he again managed to break the cordon and escape. However, in their third and highly professional attempt in Ranchi, Jashpur Police successfully cornered him, leaving him no chance to escape.Upon interrogation, Ravi Oraon confessed to the crime, and with sufficient evidence, he was formally arrested and sent to judicial remand.Oraon’s Criminal History and AccoladesIt’s important to note that Ravi Oraon is a habitual offender.

He had previously committed a bank robbery in the Manora police station area, and several cases of theft are registered against him in Gumla Police Station, for which he has served jail time.SSP Jashpur, Shri Shashi Mohan Singh, stated, “Jashpur Police, with exceptional professionalism, has arrested the absconding accused Ravi Oraon in connection with the robbery and murder in Batkela, Kansabel police station area, from Ranchi, Jharkhand, and sent him to judicial remand.
